DoomRL 0.9.9 released... what next?
18 October 2009
If you missed the news (how could you?) DoomRL 0.9.9 has been released, and is available for download now! The other news is my 26th birthday today!
Hence, a (rather modest) post about the future would be in order, wouldn’t it?

DoomRL 0.9.9 was an important milestone. Although I didn’t tackle two of the more important features — Graphics and Modding — DoomRL is slowly nearing completion. Questions arise, where to focus strength now?
First of all, my main objective now is to get donation-driven development rolling. The reason here is to allow me to treat ChaosForge as my main job. Yes, I’m shyly trying to achieve what Tarn Adams achieved with Dwarf Fortress. While a month ago, this seemed ages away, a brief look at the donation statistics gives me hope – 500$ in 20 days. Twice much, and I could focus most of my time on ChaosForge and it’s games.
However, I’m not trying just to expect to get money for what I’ve done up to date — time to expand plans, to aim higher, and try to do things that really would excite people so they’d really want to support me.
I am perfectly aware of the differences in scale between DoomRL and Dwarf Fortress — DF is an epic game that people invest their lives in, while DoomRL is merely a coffee-break past-time. That’s why ChaosForge’s further voyages aim on expanding that.
No fears, DoomRL will stay as coffee-break as it is. I am perfectly aware, that while the coffee-break style is DoomRL’s main weakness, it’s also it’s biggest asset — expansion will happen in other projects.
I hear some DoomRL fans crying — “does that mean DoomRL will be abandoned?”. Nope, I assure you… one of the planned projects is DoomRL 2 : Hell on Earth ;).
